How can I make canned frosting taste homemade? Also, boxed mix?

Maybe you can just add some more of the ingredients that are already in the can. The reason that it tastes not home made is because they make it in a factory and have to use cheap ingredients. So just add some fresh ones. I also don't think that it is wise to be using all of those substitutions for the cake. Trust me....I tried it before and it turned out horrible.....hope this helps! :)
