This is just a manifestation of the "big fish in small pond" versus the "small fish in big pond" syndrome. We all interact within small circles of some sort, e.g. school, work, social environments, etc., and it stands to reason that we are mostly compared with our peers. In the greater scheme of things, of course, it's not important. You can see it for what it is, so there's no need to be unduly upset or cynical about it.
